Less Print Periodicals in the Library Collection

In response to the provincial budget cut for the 2013-14 budget the librarians reviewed the amount of funds spent on print copies of periodicals, especially the amount spent on duplicated print issues of materials available electronically. A large number of print periodical subscriptions have been cancelled and the copies in print have been removed from the shelves. There are a number of reasons for this decision:

  • The use of print journals and magazines has been steadily declining over the past decade while the use of electronic resources has been increasing.
  • All of the periodicals that have been eliminated are available electronically and research shows that students prefer electronic resources.
  • In order to be good stewards of the public funds, the library should not be paying twice for access to the same information in different formats.

The decision about the collection was made with users in mind. Students and researchers will benefit:

  • Electronic articles are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year; access does not depend on library hours.
  • The space occupied by the print periodicals will be repurposed to increase consultation and study space: to provide more space for users.
  • The remaining print journal collection will be displayed, providing better access to the titles, and some of the funds saved by cancelling the subscriptions will be used to enhance the electronic collection, making it more attractive to students and researchers.

New Library System at MHC

It was an exciting day at the Vera Bracken Library, as staff celebrated the official launch of a new integrated library system at MHC: WorldShare Management Services (WMS) by OCLC.

For the past six months, library staff members have worked diligently to migrate data from the old system, learn new workflows, and perform a variety of cleanup projects.

WMS is an entirely cloud-based solution which allows for greater efficiency behind the scenes.  For MHC Library patrons, a new catalogue provides seamless access to both physical resources and online databases, streamlined interlibrary loan requests, and much more.

Judy Bohnet: Library User of the Month

Judy Bohnet
Administrative Assistant, Academic Resources Centre

The Vera Bracken Library is my most favorite place to visit on campus.  The staff have done an outstanding job of keeping with an academic learning environment, but at the same time making the library a place to relax, read, rest and rejuvenate.

One of the services I have greatly appreciated this year is the 'One Community One Card.'  It is so convenient to pick up and return material here, rather than make a special trip to the public library.
