Admir Omercic: December User of the Month

Admir Omercic
Johnson Controls - Maintenance

I have always appreciated libraries.  Throughout my entire schooling the library was the best place for study and relaxation.

Whether I was in the library of my home country Bosnia, later the library in Germany, or right here in Medicine Hat, I always felt that the library is my home away from home.

Medicine Hat library is the place where I find the ideas and solutions for my countless projects and activities, where I plan my travels through travel books, or just relax while reading some magazines.

And the best part is all of it is free with excellent library staff always ready to help out.

October Book Review Winner: Daniel Schnee

Congratulations to Daniel Schnee - winner of our October book review contest!  Daniel's winning review of Stanislaw Lem's The Cyberiad is reproduced below.

Long before such television shows as The Big Bang Theory or Frasier made fun of intelligent people lacking wisdom there were many great literary satires of philosophical or scientific fanaticism, such as Stanislaw Lem’s The Cyberiad, a collection of funny short stories detailing the galactic misadventures of Trurl and Klapaucius: two brilliant engineers or “constructors” with an uncanny ability to not foresee the consequences of their work.  In Lem’s future world, the idea that science is the answer to everything is revealed to be more capable of creating a dystopia than Utopia, and the two constructors enthusiastically chase the dream of the perfect machine.  What are the results?  A device that can create anything starting with the letter N starts erasing all of reality in order to “create” Nothing, two opposing cybernetic armies end up dancing through the meadows together – holding hands and happily picking flowers, and a benign machine begins harming the galaxy with poems.  Trurl and Klapaucius travel the Universe ultimately doing more harm than good, and thus is the message of the book: the drive for perfection usually ends up achieving its opposite, no matter how clever humanity becomes.  But whether the stories are delightfully silly or poignantly profound, The Cyberiad is a brilliant and highly entertaining work of science fiction – instantly engaging, and worthy of being called a classic.

Lynnette Slack - October User of the Month

Lynnette Slack
Social Work Program, Second Year

I am honoured to be recognized as the Vera Bracken Library user of the month. I am a mature student who has come back to college after 20 years of being a stay at home parent. I would like to thank the library staff for being friendly and understanding as I am learning how to better use the library. As a second year Social Work student I am using this information in new ways with each assignment. I am teaching my children the importance of having an education and now I am showing them that it is never too late to start something new. I often bring my children to the library in the evening and we do our homework together.

Allen VandenBerg: September User of the Month

Allen VandenBerg
Vice-President, Student and College Services

I am very honoured to be recognized by the great people in the library.  It is truly a special place to be on campus and for me it is the main venue for my professional development.  I find it a wonderful haven both for its useful resources and as a place to contemplate how knowledge from those resources can be adapted to this already fine institution.  The library and its staff are part of what will ensure this college continues to grow and develop into an even finer post-secondary institution.  The library is a dynamic place that serves students directly and serves those who serve our students.  Thanks!

More details are available here.

To get started, connect to the ShawOpen network and open your web browser to authenticate:

Don't worry, this does not mean you must be a Shaw customer in order to access WiFi at MHC.  We do still offer free WiFi access through the college's own network.

Jasmina Ilic: April User of the Month

Jasmina Ilic
Social Work Program
Life is unpredictable, and nobody knows what tomorrow brings for any of us. To begin with, I moved to Canada from Croatia fourteen years ago. My passion for learning helped me to step into the amazing world of education at the Medicine Hat College. I am very thankful for everyone’s help because, finally, after many years, I feel that I am walking on the right path in my life.

Vera Bracken Library deserves a special “thank you”. At the very beginning of my schooling, I felt very confused and concerned about the material that I had to learn. However, in those hardest moments I walked into our library and asked for help. Lovely faces at the front desk gently asked me: “How can I help you?” From that moment I felt like the doors of knowledge were opened to me, and any time I had concerns, I would freely walk into the library and ask for help. The library staff has always been eager to help. The speed of service as well as the hospitality of the library staff are qualities that should be recognized. Every part of the library has special meaning to me. Many times when I wanted to relax and find a little peace for my soul after studying, those comfy armchairs provided comfort for my mind.

Finally, Marcel Proust would say, “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” And I would like to thank all of you who have enhanced my life with your priceless help. Vera Bracken Library will be a part of my life forever and I am proud of it.

Check Out Our Green Display!

In spite of the winter storm over the weekend, spring (and the colour green) is still coming!

To ease the transition, be sure to check out our display of green books in the Café Corner at the Vera Bracken Library.  While some titles are “green” in the environmental sense, others are simply green in colour.  All, however, are guaranteed to provide much needed distraction from icy sidewalks, snow-covered vehicles, and 90 km/h wind gusts.

Ryo Morimoto - March User of the Month

Ryo Morimoto
3rd Year Visual Communications Student

“The library (in general) used to be my least favorite place to go. The Vera Bracken Library however is one of the places I would casually stop by at the Medicine Hat College. The very first reason is because the staff is very professional. I can't thank them enough for their help with my studies. Without them I would not have developed my English this far. Another reason is that the library has a very relaxing environment so that I can almost forget about stressful classes. As a Visual Communications student I really like walking around and seeing artwork on the walls or on the shelves. This helps me take my mind off things if I am having a bad day.”

Allison Keller - February User of the Month

Allison Keller
Environmental Reclamation

My favourite place within the Medicine Hat College campus is the library.  The Vera Bracken Library is a place where I come to study, research and relax.  The resources are phenomenal and the staff is incredibly helpful (just in case you cannot find that book you are looking for).  I have used the library every day since I began my post-secondary education and it pleases me to know I can continue to come here until I finish my studies.  Thank you to the entire staff for your excellent help and positive, supportive attitude.
