Stephen Little - January User of the Month

Stephen Little
3rd Year BN/RN Student

Years ago I decided to leave the workforce and set a higher standard for myself and upgrade my high school sciences. The library became my new niche; I would strategically place myself in the cubbies along the west wall of the library, studying chemistry and physics.  The high ceilings and transom windows provided an uplifting atmosphere throughout my upgrading and UT science courses. Not only did the library provide an enriching learning environment, it also has sentimental value to me. I tutored a classmate (who I eventually married) in organic chemistry every week at the same table!

However, it was not until I began the RN/BN program in 2010, that I fully realized and then utilized the services available at the library: I learned the APA style of writing scientific papers, accessed medical references available, and familiarized myself with the online databases. The Staff at the College library have always been extremely helpful with my numerous questions and accommodating with my requests for AV equipment, human anatomy models, and reservations of course material.  The Vera Bracken Library is a beautiful and valuable resource, and will always be central to my education now and in the future!

Barbara Mitchell - December User of the Month

Barbara Mitchell
Educational Technology Services

“Service above and beyond.” How true! When I find myself asking for help for the umpteenth time in a day I still get friendly, knowledgeable and helpful service. It is obvious the library staff take pride in the role they play in the success of the college. As an Educational Technologies Specialist at MHC, the Library staff’s collaborative nature and their constant hunt for new and innovative technologies that enhance access to information and services is invaluable to me. And, personally, I think the space itself is just a great place to be.

Inaccessible ERIC documents

Due to the discovery of sensitive, personal information in various full-text documents available in the  Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) database, the ERIC team has taken the measure of disabling access to many full-text documents while sensitive information can be located and removed.

Consequently, MHC Library patrons who use ERIC may encounter records for full-text articles that are not available.  Until complete full-text access is restored, ERIC has set up a form whereby users can request that specific articles be prioritized for review.  MHC Library Services also recommends users search alternative databases to find similar information.

Adine Neilson - November User of the Month

Adine Neilson
3rd year Education student

“The Vera Bracken Library has become a “home away from home” for me. It is a clean, bright and comfortable environment that offers many different study areas. The group study rooms are a great place for working on team projects. As an education student, I appreciate the many different types of resources available, including children’s books and interactive activity kits. However, the best resource the library has is the staff. They go out of their way to help you or just offer some conversation when you need a break from studying. Whether I’m looking for a specific journal article or a good book to read on the weekend, I can always count on the staff to help me find what I am looking for. I also appreciate the many ways I can interact with library staff, whether it is in person, text messaging, telephone or email. The library team has been an integral part of my success as a student.”

Charanjit Kaur Ubhi - October User of the Month

"Feeling great - selected as a library user of the month. I am Charanjit, a student of the OTA/PTA program. I am an international student from India. I have visited so many libraries but I found the Vera Bracken Library the best of its kind. It is fully equipped with all the resources required by every age group. I always love to spend my time in this library. I can’t explain why I find the atmosphere of this library so pleasant and soothing to mind that I don’t feel like going home for studying. This library feels like my home and the staff of the library seems like a family, so co-operative and helpful at every step; you just say it and they are ready to help you as much as they can. They are the most valuable asset to this wonderful library. For me the best place in Medicine Hat is the Vera Bracken Library with wonderful resources which we all should take advantage of. Good luck to all for your future endeavors."

Top Hat Teen Reads

The Medicine Hat College Library invites all students to participate in a reading initiative this school year.

The Vera Bracken Library along with the Medicine Hat Public Library and together with Eagle Butte High School, Medicine Hat High School & Crescent Heights High School are working together on this project. The idea is simple enough. We want students to read more. To that end we've chosen a selection of books that cover a wide variety of things. We’d like you to read them over the year and then vote on your favourite at the end of the school year.

For education students this is an opportunity to see what your future students are reading. For everyone else the books are a nice diversion from your regular intense readings. We know how busy college can be, but reading is a great change of pace to our hectic lives.

Some books you’ll be inclined to read. Some you won’t, but we’d like you to try something new. We’ve planned events and prizes for those who participate. Details, updates and everything you need to know can be found on our blog – tophatteenreads.blogspot.ca or just drop by and visit us in the library.

So come check us out. Read something new. Yolo.

Graphic Novels at the Vera Bracken Library

Did you know that MHC Library Services collects Graphic Novels?

Graphic Novels are "book length collections of sequential art containing a single story, or a set of interrelated stories" (Young Adult Library Services Association).

Contrary to popular opinion, graphic novels are not superhero comic books or picture books intended for children.  On the contrary, many graphic novels deal with serious adult themes.  Art Spiegelman's award winning Maus: A survivor's tale, for instance, places the reader alongside a terrified Jewish family living in Nazi-occupied Poland.

So, where should you go to find graphic novels?  In the Vera Bracken Library, there is currently a selection of graphic novels on display near the front entrance next to the Cafe Corner.

Alternatively, you can browse the shelves under PN 6700, which is where most graphic novels are located.  Titles can also be found by conducting a subject search for "graphic novels" in the library's catalogue

Dr. Nancy Brown - September User of the Month

Dr. Nancy Brown
Faculty Member, UT-Science

“I am a faculty member in the UT-Science program and my classes include genetics, cell biology, biochemistry and immunology. You can often find me nestled in one of the library’s comfy chairs doing some reading as I love to be surrounded by books.

This past winter semester, all my Biology 331 students participated in a post-project interview. The library was the perfect back-drop for the students to talk about their project experience as the library and its resources were the foundation of the project. These video-taped interviews became part of an international conference presentation in the spring.

For me, the library is the place to go to for answers! Some days I find the answer in a book. Some days I find the answer in a video for my class. And many days the incredible library staff has the answer I am looking for.”

Changes to Proquest Databases

MHC Library Services recently switched over to Proquest’s new web interface.  This updated platform retains the search features you know and love and repackages them in a more attractive and user-friendly way.

Among the new features are two particularly useful ones:
  • Auto-complete: Established keywords are recommended on-the-fly based on what you type
  • Keywords in context: Your search terms are highlighted within the search results
Accompanying the interface update are some minor changes to the organizational structure of the individual databases.  In particular, users now have the option to search the following newspaper databases directly:
In the past, these products could only be searched via Canadian Newsstand Complete- rest assured, these products are still indexed in that database as well.

Additionally, CBCA Reference & CBCA Current Events have now been combined in the form of CBCA Reference & Current Events.

As always, these databases and many more are available via our databases page.  Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have about the changeover.

Ben Hughes - April User of the Month

To me, the library is like a fresh, steamy, cheesy pot of macaroni. It’s hard to go to the library and not feel full of happiness. And the library staff, like Lana and Gloria, are like the milk and butter that make the library experience that much better! They are so willing to help with a smile and I’m convinced there is nothing they can’t do!

And the comfortable study areas, whether with groups or on your own make the library that much more tastier, just like macaroni! I want to thank the library and its staff for being such a huge part of my success at the college this year. I love the library!

This show displays the sculptures created by the students in the ARFN 233 class at Medicine Hat College. Their task was to "use multiples of a small object to create a sculpture that makes a statement." You will see that the results were very impressive.

If you cannot see the display in person, then browse the slideshow [enlarge the slideshow to discover more about the each piece and the artists]:

Audiobooks at the Vera Bracken Library

For today’s College student, keeping up with school, work, and social commitments often leaves little time to relax with a good book.  Thanks to the Vera Bracken Library’s audiobook collection, however, your leisure reading need not suffer any longer!

An audiobook is a CD recording of a book read aloud by a narrator.   Consequently, audiobooks liberate readers from the physical act of reading and are an ideal distraction while travelling, cleaning, or working out.
The library currently owns more than 90 audiobooks including titles such as The Jungle Book, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Kite Runner.

To find these and other titles, simply visit our catalogue and search for “audiobooks”.

Library User of the Month - March 2012

Veerpaul Bhullar
Business Administration (Accounting)

“I am currently in my first year of Business Administration with Accounting as my major. After the completion of my course, I am planning on furthering my education to obtain my CGA. Apart from my studies, I am currently volunteering for the Student Ambassador Program.

Regarding any library, one may think of it as a place meant just for studies and without any excitement or fun. But for me as an international student from India, the Vera Bracken Library in our college is just like a home for me where I relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, spend time doing assignments, solving problems, making new friends and feeling at home. The staff in the library is really helpful and cooperative towards students. I learnt a lot from them and get solutions to many of my problems there.

The environment as well as the deliberate layout of the library is very positive and inviting. I feel great to be selected as the library user of the month and want to express my gratitude towards the library staff for their endless efforts in creating and maintaining a positive learning atmosphere for all the students.”
