Kobo & SD Cards Go Great Together

Have you wanted to read your own articles or books on one of our Kobo eReaders? Well, you can.

If you load your ePub or PDF formatted documents on an SD card (4GB maximum, not SDHC compatible), you can read your own selections on either of two Kobo eReaders that are available from the Vera Bracken Library's circulation desk. This includes PDF formatted articles that can be downloaded from the databases or any of our handy how-to guides.

  1. Provide your own or borrow an SD card from the library.

  2. Load the ePub or PDF file to the card. (We also provide card readers.)

  3. Plug the card into the Kobo eReader.

  4. Read your files.

There are too many public domain books for us to load onto the Kobo devices. Fortunately for fans of the classics, you can go to sites like epubBooks, ManyBooks, Project Gutenburg (and many more) and download titles for free.

You can also perform a Google search using [book title] format:epub OR pdf to search for specific titles in ePub or PDF formats (e.g., moby dick format:epub).

New Databases Added - Automotive & Business

Library Services has added three new databases to support students in the automotive and business/management/marketing programs at Medicine Hat College. The new databases are:

ALLDATA Online replaces the Chilton Library database for students in the automotive program. This database is a powerful, easy-to-use resource for automotive technicians requiring information about vehicles that includes, but is not limited to: diagnostic trouble codes, diagrams, part locations, specifications, and technical service bulletins, etc. The database provides information for most vehicle makes and models since 1982 and is updated regularly.

This Hoover's Inc. database contains industry profiles, call prep sheets, and provincial and state profiles. These resources, "are essential for call preparation, enhancing presentations, underwriting credit, and for quickly learning a company's key business issues."

Monthly statistics and quarterly trend updates for more than 900 industry segments. This database also provides monthly employment, business, and real estate trends in each of the Canadian provinces and US states.

Hoover's is a database that provides comprehensive information and profiles about companies and industries, and the people that run them. This resource also provides news feeds about those companies, industry, and people. It is updated regularly.

With the exception of ALLDATA Online, the databases are accessible by staff and students from on-campus or at home. If you are having trouble connecting, please contact Library Services via:
You can view our database collection by clicking here.

Library User of the Month - October 2010

Lindsay Binkley
University of Alberta Education student

“As an education student, I think a brilliant library can be a central hub for planning, learning and working with others. Preparing engaging and meaningful lessons for students often requires some research, resources, and, at times, some direction . . . all which can be found in the Vera Bracken Library.

The atmosphere of the library encourages me to feel comfortable and creative by providing many diverse areas for me to complete my work, knowledgeable people to answer my questions, and a vast collection of books, articles, and other media to ensure that I can always find what I’m looking for. I couldn’t ask for a better 'classroom.'

Thank you, Vera Bracken Library!”
